Wisdom is defined as: the ability to connect your instinct, intuition, and knowledge with the world. To be wise, you must be present, and aware, and use knowledge, understanding, and compassion. It is the ability to see, hear, and explain truth. Being present is a wonderful way to view wisdom.
Wisdom as a Person?
But can wisdom describe a person also? Or is there one person in particular, who represents perfect and all-knowing wisdom? Can wisdom have emotions also?
(Proverbs 8:1-4 WEB) 1Doth not wisdom cry? and understanding put forth her voice? 2She standeth on the top of high places, by the way in the places of the paths. 3She crieth at the gates, at the entry of the city, at the entrance of the doors. 4To you, O men, I call; and my voice [is] to the sons of man.
Here wisdom appears to be a person since the qualities of a human being are used. I believe the feminine reference to wisdom is based on its attribute. Verse 4 seems focused on men. And wisdom seems to be under stress.
Now wisdom is speaking. And wisdom expresses a concern that simple people will come to understand.
(Proverbs 8:5-9 WEB) 5O ye simple, understand wisdom: and ye fools, be ye of an understanding heart. 6Hear; for I will speak of excellent things; and the opening of my lips [shall be] right things. 7For my mouth shall speak truth; and wickedness [is] an abomination to my lips. 8All the words of my mouth [are] in righteousness; [there is] nothing froward or perverse in them. 9They [are] all plain to him that understandeth, and right to them that find knowledge.
Wisdom claims to be qualified to speak of truth and righteousness. Many people today claim to know truth. And conspiracy theories are believed by many. It is difficult to know truth except for the character of the person speaking. How can we attest to wisdom’s claims to be righteous and truthful? Since the Proverbs were written long ago, we have the advantage of hindsight.
As Wisdom continues to speak, I believe we see parallels to the New Testament and Jesus. Especially the contrasts between silver and gold versus instruction and knowledge.
(Acts 3:6 WEB) Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have I give thee: in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.
(2 Corinthians 6:10 WEB) As sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and [yet] possessing all things.
(Proverbs 8:10-14 WEB) 10Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold. 11For wisdom [is] better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it. 12I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of ingenious inventions. 13The fear of the LORD [is] to hate evil: pride, and arrogance, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate. 14Counsel [is] mine, and sound wisdom: I [am] understanding; I have strength.
People who are focused on others and encourage one another are finding and refining the real jewels in life. Wealth may come by honest endeavors or dishonest endeavors. But at the end of the day their wealth does nothing to give or receive the love and encouragement that we as human beings crave.
I’ve always had problems with Biblical references to the government. I have no problem with the right and duty of civil authorities to exercise justice . But when the civil authorities are evil themselves a change is needed. In the relatively just society in America before 1776, the citizens, rightly I believe, exercised their rights as British citizens who had no vote, to rebel and set up a just government.
(Proverbs 8:15-19 WEB) 15By me kings reign, and princes decree justice. 16By me princes rule, and nobles, [even] all the judges of the earth. 17I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me. 18Riches and honor [are] with me; durable riches and righteousness. 19My fruit [is] better than gold, yes, than fine gold; and my revenue than choice silver.
Currently in America there is a lack of civility and trust in our systems of government. All of this could be changed by our citizens. But if all we vote for is our own parochial interests and believe one conspiracy story after another, we will continue down the road of divisiveness.
Alan Keyes (American politician and diplomat) stated in his Iowa straw poll speech, August 14, 1999 : “There can be no self-government without self-discipline. There can be no self-government without self-control. There can be no liberty unless it is grounded in moral discipline and the ability to do what is right.”
There is no wisdom without righteousness. Judgement comes from the very nature of the creation. Wisdom will create wealth for the righteous. And wealth is being satisfied with enough, walking with God, and counting our treasures in relationships with family, friends, and the church.
(Proverbs 8:20-23 WEB) 20I lead in the way of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of judgment. 21That I may cause those that love me to inherit substance; and I will fill their treasures. 22The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old. 23I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was.
Do verses 22 and 23 say anything different than:
(John 1:1-3 WEB) 1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2The same was in the beginning with God. 3All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
Before All Things
And don’t Proverbs 8:24-29 line up with Colossians?
(Colossians 1:15-18 WEB) 15Who is the image of the invisible God, the first-born of every creature: 16For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are upon earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. 18And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the first-born from the dead; that in all [things] he may have the pre-eminence.
Before Creation Wisdom existed. Neither Wisdom or Christ was an afterthought.
(Proverbs 8:24-29 WEB) 24When [there were] no depths, I was brought forth; when [there were] no fountains abounding with water. 25Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth. 26While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world. 27When he prepared the heavens, I [was] there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth: 28When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep: 29When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth:
There is an obvious similarity between the Creator and Wisdom; as there is also between Jesus and the Word. The association(S) are from the eternity past. The scriptures have been verified by the Dead Sea Scrolls to be virtually unchanged for over 2,000 years and further point to a single Creator who exists in Trinity (completely beyond our human understanding.
(Proverbs 8:30-33 WEB) 30Then I was by him, [as] one brought up [with him]: and I was daily [his] delight, rejoicing always before him; 31Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights [were] with the sons of men. 32Now therefore hearken to me, O ye children: for blessed [are they that] keep my ways. 33Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not.
The Old testament, the Books of Poetry in the Bible, and the New Testament all point to the same story. The story of Redemption purchased by God’s Son and verified by His Resurrection.

There is a simple formula for eternal life. Believe in a loving God of Justice who has Created everything.
(Proverbs 8:34-36 WEB) 34Blessed [is] the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors. 35For whoever findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favor from the LORD. 36But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.
My answer to the question I presented is that Wisdom, the Word, and Jesus are the same, or of the same essence.
