Prayer Index Cards

There is nothing more important in the life of a Christian or in the life of a church (being understood as the people generally assembled in a building). But unfortunately a lot of time spent in prayer is not properly focused. Illness, travel mercies, jobs, homes, etc. are the main topics on our wish lists.

But for me a Christian I need to ask what is my purpose. Just to be safe and comfortable I don’t think comes close. Praying for others (that I like) is a little better. But should we be satisfied if those we know are OK and everyone else is literally on their own. Do we concern ourselves with lost souls or carnal Christians. Do we even know who they are outside of gossip?

When I pray as I outlined in the worksheets that were downloadable from my page on the Bible, we need to be about holistic ministry. Starting with the saints and including lost or struggling souls.

The reality is that when we pray for these larger issues, our own path in Chrisitian ministry becomes clearer. And if someone is praying for us about issues we have that are deeper than the surface issues that make up 95% of our prayer life, we will receive more blessings still.

The Prayer Index Card I’m showing serves many different purposes. But right up front it’s made to be shared with one person. A person you can trust not to gossip. And a person that you feel, or hopefully know, can pray intelligently and spiritually, over the concerns that you list.

I will advise though that praying about the deeper spiritual issues of our Christian commitment may not lead us to the most comfortable situations. But should we excuse ourselves when Jesus didn’t?

(Luke 14:26-28 NLT) 26“If you want to be my disciple, you must hate everyone else by comparison–your father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters–yes, even your own life. Otherwise, you cannot be my disciple. 27And if you do not carry your own cross and follow me, you cannot be my disciple. 28“But don’t begin until you count the cost. For who would begin construction of a building without first calculating the cost to see if there is enough money to finish it?

This Prayer Index Card I’m showing is not for the timid. We are in a spiritual war. And our enemy means to bring us down. If we hold onto the things of earth, Satan will have outflanked our defenses. But no matter what friends, family, or the world may think of our choices, because we didn’t choose health and wealth first, we’ll experience a closer connection to God and His Kingdom.

There’s already a prayer list at our churches for most of what we pray for. But the prayer card is meant for the advancement of God’s Kingdom. The four sections are for:

  1. Prayer Need for Me – For my part in the battle ahead. We may not yet know what that is – but we pray that God will make that clear.
  2. Pray for Non-Christian Friend – the leading edge of our advance is winning over lost souls. It won’t always be us – we may only plant seed – someone else may be the culmination of a joint effort when a lost soul is baptized.
  3. Other Prayer Need – Several different issues could be listed here. Basically whatever is standing in the way of #1 and/or #2.
  4. Answers to Prayer & Praises – We often have reasons to thank God for answered Prayer and to give God praises.

These cards will sooner or later be used for the more routine issues of church and family life. But the potential is here to go deeper as a person matures in their spiritual life.

Confidentiality is key to the use of these cards. And they’re meant to be shared with only one other person. That deosn’t seem like it would have a great impact. But the impact is only limited by the number of people not participating. There are many ways to get church attenders more involved. But this one involves the members at a personal level and at a level that will include the Holy Spirit.

And the chain may be folllowed: person by person by person by person by person by person by . . . . . . .
