Recently I discovered in Psalm 101 a prayer that is directed at a nation that is in danger from corrupting influences of deserting the disciplines that have made our nation great. And I believe the family is our (and God’s) most sacred institution. I especially like verse 7 which says ” He that worketh deceit shall not dwell within my house: he that telleth lies shall not tarry in my sight. ” This is where the husband and father needs to step in and guard the emotional and spiritual lives of the family.
The first verse in Psalm 101 says: ” I will sing of mercy and judgment: to thee, O LORD “. And the last verses says: ” I will early destroy all the wicked of the land; that I may cut off all who practice wickedness “.
(Psalm 101:1-2 WEB) 1A Psalm of David. I will sing of mercy and judgment: to thee, O LORD, will I sing. 2I will behave myself wisely in a perfect way. O when wilt thou come to me? I will walk within my house with a perfect heart.
King David asks God to walk with him as David contemplates the balance between mercy and judgement. Guiding a nation or a church involves decisions that affect the management of either. But the place where this is most important is in the home.
(Psalm 101:3-5 WEB) 3I will set no wicked thing before my eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not cleave to me. 4A froward* heart shall depart from me: I will not know a wicked [person]. 5Whoever privily slandereth his neighbor, him will I cut off: him that hath a high look and a proud heart I will not suffer.
*froward is (of a person) difficult to deal with; contrary.
Haven’t we all run into people who are fountains of negativity. Other than being a witness to them, they don’t need to be entering your life and especially the lives of your family. We also need to pray for others who have been harmed by such people.
(Psalm 101:6 WEB) My eyes [shall be] upon the faithful of the land, that they may dwell with me: he that walketh in a perfect way, he shall serve me.
(Psalm 101:7-8 WEB) 7He that worketh deceit shall not dwell within my house: he that telleth lies shall not tarry in my sight. 8I will early destroy all the wicked of the land; that I may cut off all who practice wickedness from the city of the LORD.
There are people that are a clear danger to others around them. When they reach that point then individuals and government have a duty to disable their actions. This is a problem that our society is struggling with. And it’s not just physical violence, but sex trafficking, drugs, crime, domestic abuse, etc..
If we surround ourselves with wholesome people and influences we’ll have the emotional margin to witness to the bad actors and be an influence for their salvation.
Praying for Revival
These words seem harsh and unforgiving. But it’s the consequences for our families and our nation that are unforgiving. We need to pray like this also, not for the damnation of individuals, but certainly for their just punishment and taking away their influence.
As we read Psalm 101 it’s easy to picture worldly people who cause the degredation in our society and are a bad influence on our families. And some of them are in our family trees – actually more than a “few”. This is where prayer and consistent kindness can change the beliefs of those who at some time start to observe and listen to what we stand for.
It’s easy to blame politicians (or voters), church leaders (or laymen and laywomen), or educators (or students). But the collaspe of values in our country is so pervasive, who could you possibly leave out?
Personally my prayers for this broad target starts with the husbands and fathers. Overall and first of all at this point, we need to strengthen families – and that starts with the heads of the households taking responsibilty by insuring that the trash of life (either thoughts, words, deeds, or people) are not allowed in our homes.
Please pray Psalm 101 frequently. Pray that we can see a tangible revival occur within our families and our churches. Let us give no quarter worldly influences and instead celebrate Jesus Christ. And if really pray expecting God to respond, then we’ll see revival in America.
(2 Chronicles 7:14 WEB) If my people, who are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
