Family and Servants

The two most intimate settings in a person’s life is their family and their place of work. In the case of the home the husband is the accountable person to God for ther family.

Husband and Wife

(Colossians 3:18-19 WEB) 18Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord. 19Husbands, love [your] wives, and be not bitter against them.

Husbands seem to focus on: (Ephesians 5:22 WEB) Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands, as to the Lord. But there are other verses that should soften the husbands view of his wife. Even in this verse the husband should remember that he’s also under the authority of Christ and that Christ died for his wife also.

If the husband is wise he will observe that women’s intuition is a real thing. The woman has more connections between the left and right sides of the brain. It’s a reason that they can multi-task easier than men. And because more facts are seen as connected they have a broader spectrum of the whole issue. That does break done some when the wife becomes over-protective. They are more emotional and understand emotions more. And the wife lives with the husband and knows him better than anyone else. To ignore her counsel would be foolish.

Dad Home from Work

A husband cannot love his wife if he does not love himself. Although the following verses assume this is the norm, it is not to be assumed in our current culture.

(Ephesians 5:25, 29 WEB) 25Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; … 29For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:

The husband is to love his wife like Christ loved the church. That means being her last line of defense. My preacher has refused to marry couples if the man would not commit to this central plank in a healthy marriage. So there should be no doubt on the husband’s part that he is fully accountable for the family.

Father and Children

(Colossians 3:18-21 WEB) 20Children, obey [your] parents in all things: for this is well-pleasing to the Lord. 21Fathers, provoke not your children [to anger], lest they be discouraged.

This verse is pretty straight-forward. The father should enjoy his children and interact and play with them frequently. But he must remain a parent and insist that his wife is equally respected. The children must learn to respect their parents and other figures of authority as they mature. The parents need to be consistent and model respect for others. As in everything balance is required and children allowed greater responsibility as they get older. When it comes to “balance” there will be mistakes and parents should not hesitate to apologize when needed.

There is one caveat that an Elder in my church mentioned one time. And that is about provking your children. He said when they are adults the rule no longer applies.

Servants and Masters

Thankfully today we can consider Employees and Employers. And while the verses seem to only mention “servants” I believe that both employees and employers are subject to equal standards by God.

(Colossians 3:22-25 WEB) 22Servants, obey in all things [your] masters according to the flesh; not with eye-service, as men-pleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God: 23And whatever ye do, do [it] heartily, as to the Lord, and not to men; 24Knowing that from the Lord ye will receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. 25But he that doeth wrong, will receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons.

The key to these verses is doing everything as if to the Lord and not men. I’ve seen employers ask employees to lie while they say they dislike dishonest employees the most. Dishonesty looks the same to God in both cases. Except that employees are fired and employers are sued.

But for the Christian it is important to be honest and to give our best efforts as to God. Even if it means we’re fired or sued. It’s more important we follow God will receive an inheritance as his children and others that followed the will of worldly men will receive Satan’s inheritance.

For Masters Only

(Ephesians 6:9 WEB) And, ye masters, do the same things to them, forbearing threatening: knowing that your Master also is in heaven; neither is there respect of persons with him. (Colossians 4:1 WEB) Masters, give to [your] servants that which is just and equal; knowing that ye also have a Master in heaven.

The masters or employers are also stewards of the benefits due to employees and also responsible for their well being while they are employed.

In fact we are all stewards towards one another on behalf of the Lord. It’s to God that we owe our greatest alligeiance asd receive our greatest benefits.
