We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
Unfortunately America has never completely achieved this declaration of equality and opportunity.
I believe we have an exaggerated sense of freedom that borders on license. During the American Revolution our citizens assumed a mutual responsibility to each other and our elected government (Continental Congress).
But even during our revolution, many had accepted a lesser role for blacks and Irish. The Irish being white and having never been “owned” but only “indentured or poor” could walk away from their past because they were already white. Blacks were not free or white.
How can we celebrate the 4th of July and not seek to finish the task of creating an inclusive society and an inclusive economy? We can start by not thinking in the paradigm of us and them. All of us will be freer and more prosperous if we build a culture that reflects our Declaration of Independence; and the diversity of our population.
We should adopt a new Declaration of Inter-Dependence. And our First Nations (Native Americans) peoples should be included with fair compensation for the inadequate reservations we forced them onto.
