Weekly Devotions and Prayer Guide using the acronym ACTSS
The attached Work Sheets were developed for my own Bible studies. Later more and more sheets were added for prayer. These tools have helped me and others at my church.
Our conversations with God need to be a two-way conversation. The two ways to hear from God are through the Bible and the Holy Spirit.
WHEN I STUDY THE BIBLE
I use the same method for each verse of the Bible. First read the scriptures before and after the verse, sufficient to fully understand the verse. And second to reference other scriptures in the Bible that speak to the same topic. I use a Thompson Chain-Reference Bible. It has commentary on each Book of the Bible, a Topical Cross-Reference, and a Concordance and Maps. I recommend these tools for anyone.
My favorite tool I use, especially for writing my blog posts is the Blue Letter Bible interactively at https://www.blueletterbible.org/ It is loaded with every tool that any Bible would have.
The Holy Spirit
I trust the Holy Spirit to prompt me when I’m listening based on two scriptures below.
(John 16:13-15 WEB) 13But, when he, the Spirit of truth is come, he will guide you into all the truth: for he will not speak from himself; but whatever he shall hear, [that] will he speak: and he will show you things to come. 14He will glorify me: for he will receive of mine, and will show [it] to you. 15All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore I said, that he will take of mine, and show [it] to you.
(Romans 8:26-28 WEB) 26Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what [is] the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints, according to [the will of] God. 28And we know that all things work together for good, to them that love God, to them who are the called according to [his] purpose.
The worksheets below were meant to be used as a set. But you can also just print off the ones you need. My goal was to open up my time of Devotion with studying the Bible. If we’re serious in our study it will cheer us, convict us, and/or motivate us.
On the second page of the worksheets I’ve added and “S” onto the acronym “ACTS”. The “S” stands for “Surrender”.
Surrender is needed for Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplication. Often our prayers become one long monologue with our hands out. God does answer sincere prayers, but He really longs for our presence the most. Its when we surrender in humility and gratitude that our “conversations” become meaningful. It’s when our spiritual hearing is at it’s best.
