What should be the nature of the church, given the extremely high price that was and is paid for it’s establishment.
(Colossians 1:18-20 WEB) 18And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the first-born from the dead; that in all [things] he may have the pre-eminence. 19For it pleased [the Father] that in him should all fullness dwell; 20And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things to himself; by him, [I say], whether [they are] things on earth, or things in heaven.
Here it states the phrase “He (Jesus) is the head of the body, the church” that is not considered very often in the church. It is true that church leaders will say this. Yet at the same time they put people in between God and the congregation. Part of that is valid as individuals in the church would often lead the brethren astray.
There is a hierarchy in almost all churches. We are to respect our leaders as they are accountable for the spiritual health of the congregation. At the same time however, we need to be putting God first in our lives. The proper order of hierarchy is God, Family, and then church.
I’ve witnessed preachers and lay people sacrifice their families in the name of serving God, but really serving the church. Our leaders already work harder than most of the congregation. One of the preachers my wife and I had was scrupulous about putting his family first. All four of his children are involved in full-time ministry.
In my household there was anger on my part that was offensive, abusive, and sometimes physical. And I deeply regret some of the same habits my sons picked up from me. But they did see a father and mother who put God first in their lives. My temper was addressed after my sons left home. And their temper was also addressed solely through the Holy Spirit in their case. Mine was abated through a Chrisitan Counselor over a ten week span.
I’ve asked for and received forgiveness from both of my sons. But in all of this family drama Jesus was always first (in spite of my spiritual deafness). I shudder to think where my family would be today without God.
I’ll also add that it’s easier to keep Jesus as our priority if we study the Bible on our own. Recovery will also be helped immensley.
